this was yet another big scifi movie from producer George Pal (war of the worlds, destination moon, when world's collide, the time machine)... this is easily his least successful one, as a film... though some of the special effects were some of the best in any of his films. the film would have been better-named as "mission to mars" or "conquest of mars" or something... as that's the main point... there are various cliched characters.. including the brooklyn-accented guy who apparently knows nothing about space travel, despite living on a space station for months and months... haha... but the movie really gets drug down by the main character... apparently they didn't feel that going to mars was exciting enough... so they felt they really needed to give the main character some serious psychological problem... it is actually explained fairly well in the film... but that still doesn't justify it being in the movie.... basically they get "space sickness".. which manifests itself in almost any symptom you can name... one man suddenly becomes paralyzed for a while.... the captain, on the other hand, suddenly starts reading his bible all the time, shaking a little... and eventually develops some obsession with the idea that man was not meant (by God) to go to these other worlds.... it is all because of his space sickness, though many of have seen it as some sort of attack on religion or something (i don't agree that it is)... and eventually of course the captain just goes completely crazy and tries to sabotage the ship....

as i said before... the special effects are fantastic... the designs were based on a magazine article by werner von braun, and the in-space stuff is very very well done... surprisingly, the surface of mars is even more well-done... and really pretty close to what it ended up being... surprisingly close...

all in all it's a pretty fun movie.. and i've watched it a few times... though the cliched characters, and the captain's obsession do tend to drag it down a bit...
